2016, im Alter von 19 Jahren, beginnt Valentine Cuny-Le Collet einen Briefwechsel mit Renaldo McGirth. Renaldo wurde wegen eines Mordes, den er im Alter von 18 Jahren begangen hatte, zum Tode verurteilt und sitzt seit über zehn Jahren in Florida im Gefängnis. In 2016, at the age of 19, Valentine Cuny-Le Collet began a correspondence with Renaldo McGirth. Renaldo was sentenced to death for a murder he committed at the age of 18 and has been in prison in Florida for over ten years. Their correspondence and Valentine's visits to the prison resulted in a four-handed project for a graphic narrative that tells of their parallel lives and friendship. Valentine mixes pencil work and woodcut. Renaldo draws with pencil and ballpoint pen and contributes the only color elements with his gouache paintings. His unique pictures tell of the beauty of the world, but also of the extreme conditions under which they were created. Beyond the autobiographical testimony, this narrative explores with intense emotion the brutality of a prison system, the representation of the victims and the tenacity with which the condemned try to build their lives from a five square meter cell.
